| 内容記述 | The purpose of this study is to find out the possibilities of motivating university students in a compulsory English class using a textbook which includes English songs as well as English sound changes. Also it is to clarify whether they could understand and explain sound changes in English songs : linking, assimilation and elision. Songs are supposed to be useful to weaken the affective filter which prevents second language acquisition. They also have authenticity and prosodic features which are utilized in colloquial English. From this point, English songs deserve to be used in English class. Research questions of this study were : (1) Is it meaningful for students to learn English using English songs such as Western music in class ? (2) Can they understand and explain sound changes which appear in English songs ? The participants were 23 non-English-major second-year university students. They were mainly expected to improve their listening and speaking abilities in this course. They learned authentic English through English songs and gave presentations picking out English songs they were interested in at the end of semester. As a result, the questionnaire showed that the students felt English songs were a meaningful and fun way to learn English. They could also mention the sound changes in their presentations although three students could not explain the names of those correctly. This study implied that English songs had possibilities to encourage students study English. |
