内容記述 | In the past, textbooks in almost all English classes at college were short stories of English or American literature. But in the present English education, in which improving such communicative skills as speaking and listening is considered to be the main goal, literary texts are disappearing from the classroom. That is because many think that they are not useful for giving students direct knowledge of English as a language. It certainly takes a lot of time and effort for the students to understand literary English, which is composed of complicated sentence structures and of difficult vocabulary filled with connotative meaning. However, the idea of "useful English" is diverse and not specific since language itself is definitely part of culture and English is correlated with other forms of cultures. In the sense, literary texts, which can include any kind of culture, are suitable for learning English. Another feature of literary texts is that they offer students optimal chances to think. In literary texts, various figurative expressions are used and authors leave some parts unwritten, not describing everything. Therefore, to make sense of what they read, students are forced to increase their knowledge and to make their imaginations work actively. A university or college is a place for higher education where students must acquire information, think deeply, and derive their opinions. So literary texts can be said to be very suitable textbooks to be used in English education at college. In the paper, I demonstrate how valuable literary texts can be in the college English class. |
