内容記述 | Contemporary authentic English materials such as news items (henceforth, Current English) are used as class materials at university classrooms these days because many companies tend to hire university students who have practical English skills. This research report explores how university students feel to use Current English as materials in class and have presentations as well as discussions. The Research Questions of this study were two-fold: (1) How do university students feel about using Current English whose topics are familiar with them in class? (2) How do they feel about having discussions and presentations based on the topics of Current English? The participants were 5 non-English-major voluntary students including juniors and seniors. The class was elective, and students were mainly required to improve listening and speaking skills. They had 3 remote classes and 12 face-to-face ones. In both styles, they listened to news in English, answered the questions and prepared for discussions and presentations outside of the class. They had discussions in English every time and 6 presentations in classroom through the semester. After the last lesson, they answered a questionnaire outside of the class. The results of the questionnaire showed that they felt listening to the news in English was fun, but their interests depended on the topics covered. They also felt having presentations and discussions in English was fun and challenging. This study implied that the teacher’s feedback and a wide variety of topics would motivate students. |
