内容記述 | In Philip Roth’s The Human Stain published in 2000, the singular life of Coleman Silk, who is a former classics professor and competent dean of faculty at Athena College, is depicted. His life which had seemed to leave nothing to be desired was ruined very suddenly. When he was calling the roll, he called out to the class about the two students who had not appeared in the class five times from the first, “Does anyone know these people? Do they exist, or are they spooks?” A spook means a ghost. Though Coleman insisted that he used the word for ghost, it has another meaning for a black person. He was accused of using a derogatory word and compelled to leave the college. There is controversy over whether he was insensitive in the use of word, or the adaptation of political correctness went too far in this case. What makes the novel complicated and ironical is that Coleman, who was condemned for uttering a racially discriminatory word, was an African American with a pale skin color. Even though he was an excellent student academically and physically, his being an African American restrained him in a lot of ways. So he had wished to live a free life as an individual, not being restricted by the racial disadvantage. In following the life of Coleman Silk in The Human Stain, the problems of “passing” and “political correctness” in American society will be discussed in this paper. |
