| 内容記述 | The present study aims to compare Henry Caldwell Cook's "Play Way" and TIE (Theatre-in-Education) in seeking an effective use of theatre in language education. Cook was the first to introduce theatre in the teaching of English as a first language. The TIE program used theatrical activities of professional companies for school education. Cook's Play Way and TIE method may seem similar in that both of them bring theatre into school education. However, there is a fundamental difference between the two methods. In TIE, schools cooperated with TIE companies which always kept the identity of theatre as an art form. Thus schools could not fully make use of them for teaching. On the other hand, Cook, grasping the nature of theatre, used it as an educational methodology. In doing so, he could make the most of using theatrical energy for teaching English. By recognizing the differences in these two methods, we can offer suggestions about the effective use of theatre in language education. | |||||
