内容記述 | Mrs. Dalloway (1925) is one of the principal novels written by Virginia Woolf (1882-1941). She embodies the subjects of insanity and death in the story. Her mental illness which she had suffered from since her childhood drove her to depict them in the novel. She brings Septimus Warren Smith who was in a great difficulty of shell shock after the World War I to the novel as her double. The purpose of this paper is to examine how Septimus's emotlons link with Woolf's mental symptoms and the psychoanalytic elements of Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920) written by Sigmund Freud (1856-1939). She had never read Freud and his works by 1939 when she visited him for the first time. Nevertheless, it is noticeable that Septimus embraces the characteristics of psychoanalysis, which Freud introduced in his article. Woolf had a yearning for the land where people have passed through life and death, that is to say, "Beyond the Pleasure Principle." She made Septimus possess and express the desire for death, in other words, the eternal life. Woolf could adopt psychoanalytical interpretations through her intuition and experiences without suficient study of them. In this sense, it is possible that we read Mrs. Dalloway as Woolf's psychoanalytical chart or a patient's mcdical record |
