| 内容記述 | One of the reasons why Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) was so isolated from his contemporary writers is that he was a great lover of ballads. The Life of Thomas Hardy, written by his second wife, shows how he was nurtured in a ballad-like atmosphere. Consequently ballad characteristics pervade much of his work. However, few criticism in the field has been published until now. This paper is an attempt to fill in the void, researching on thenovel The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), one of his masterpieces. Since ballad characteristics depicted in the story itself were already proved in the present writer’s former thesis, this paper focuses on thirteen such songs as traditional and broadside ballads, folk songs, ditties and psalm tunes quoted in the novel. Although most of their titles and narrative contents are not depicted, they were finally investigated through every possible means of the latest tools. Those songs are woven into the plot intentionally and help to mold the characters more completely into their circumstances. Moreover, some of them foreshadow later developments in the story. It is also proved that Hardy’s careful inclination of music provides a clue to comprehend the novel as well as a significant role in the formation of The Mayor of Casterbridge. |
