| 内容記述 | This paper is a translation with notes of the letters from Alice Jeannette Starkweather, the first woman missionary who took a post at Doshisha Girls' School (1876-1883). Materials are taken from the microfilms of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) owned by Horton Library, Harvard University. They are very valuable to the history of DWCLA, because its early history has been very little known until recently. By deciphering the handwritten missionary correspondence on the microfilms, we can gain a vivid picture of the times and the inter-cultural struggles between American missionaries and Japanese men and women in old Kyoto. We also get a deeper understanding of the thinking of the missionaries sent from the American Board at that time. We sincerely hope that our translation helps many people learn about the early history of DWCLA. | |||||
