内容記述 | In Willa Cather's A Lost Lady (1923), the heroine, Mrs Forrester is described as a brilliant lady from Niel Herbert's viewpoint. She gradually loses her elegance as a wealthy woman and reveals her instinctive desire and weakness after losing her fortune and her husband. However, since this is Niel Herbert's viewpoint, we can consider that Mrs Forrester wasn't originally so noble or respectable at all, and that, in fact, she was entirely independent. That is, she merely turns out to be a different woman from what Niel Herbert expected and is not “lost” to any things. As the story progresses, Niel Herbert in turn worships, worries about, and despises Mrs Forrester, whom he finally regards as the most attractive woman in his life. Niel Herbert wavers in his judgment of what is good for him as he matures. The aim of this essay is to explore Niel Herbert's ""Bildungsroman"" by discussing his sense of women; his view of city and country life; and what he sees as the ideal American spirit. After his idealization of Mrs Forrester, Niel Herbert views other young girls coldly, vaguely longing for eternal unmarried life without knowing the reality of women. When he enters university, he likes both the city where he will work as an architect and the hometown where Captain and Mrs Forrester welcome him. Neil Herbert esteems Captain Forrester's way of life, though he knows that Captain Forrester's prime is over, and that commercialism no longer allows for such nobility. In the end, by seeing Mrs Forrester's way of life, Niel completed his “Bildungsroman”. |
