In this paper, I reexamined the semantic properties of the constructions using '-dokoroka' and '-dokorodewanai'.
In 'P dokoroka Q', the propositions (or properties) P and Q are located on a scale (gradience), where, either (i) Q is stronger than P or (ii) Q is strnger than ^P (the contextually supposed negation of P). These features of '-dokoroka' can be explained in terms of the general meaming of the abstract noun 'tokoro' as pointed out in Teramura (1984).
In Hattori (1995) I claimed that 'P dokorodewanai' should be explained as conforming to the same semantic principles as 'P dokoroka (Q)'. In this paper I speculate that the meaning of 'P dokoroka' corresponds to an extension on the core meaning of 'P dokorodewanai'.
