The paper examines three case studies: traces of agricultural chemicals in frozen spinach, contamination of powdered milk with melamine, and food poisoning caused by frozen Chinese meat dumplings produced in China.\nIn 2000, the producer price for spinach grown in Japan was 3.9 times higher than the export price for spinach grown in China. In 2008, the price of Japanese milk as a raw material was 2.2 times higher than that in China. Meanwhile, the selling price for frozen Chinese meat dumplings produced in Japan is 3.1 times as high as those produced in China. However, the productivity of the food products mentioned above is much higher in Japan; therefore, it must be the case that the ultra underestimation of the value of the Chinese Yuan constitutes the basic factor in the ultra-low price formations for Chinese food exports.\nThis long-term ultra-low formation of export prices, lower indeed than the costs of production, leads, on one hand, to extremely competitive export prices and, on the other hand, to financial difficulties and a drop in morale, through declining realization rate of the commodity's value.\nIn the case of frozen spinach and powdered milk, the low morale of the producer and the manager led to the mass production of foods that failed to meet safety standards.
