Group A consisted of third-grade pupils who tried to solve the problem themselves. Group B consisted of pupils who tried to solve the problem with other students or a teacher.  Pupils in Group A discussed how to solve the problem after doing their own thinking. Those in Group B tried to understand the problem and discussed how to draw figures related to it. The teacher of Group A helped pupils to engage in useful discussion and communication. The teacher of Group B helped pupils to understand the problem.  Small groups are effective for problemsolving lessons in arithmetic.
