Not only does it provide opportunities to improve their language skills,but also offers students a chance to gain unique experiences overseas. One of the experiences students face is different dynamics and expectations in university classrooms. They often realize the necessity of adjusting language learning strategies to a new academic environment in order to succeed.\n This paper first defines language learning strategies and reports on a case study of eight female Japanese university students who completed one year of study abroad. It examines the changes in the use of language learning strategies that the subjects reported before and after studying abroad. The research includes the results of the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning survey,additional questionnaires,and interviews conducted with participants.
