With such high stakes, many candidates opt to repeat the test a number of times before the submission date in the hope that one of the tests will yield a sufficiently high score. This study analyzed the test results of twenty-five students who, toward the end of a year of preparation, chose to take the iBT TOEFL test two or three times within a month. The aim was to discover whether, and under what conditions, such repeated test-taking resulted in higher scores. Students were also asked in interviews what factors they believed contributed to higher or lower scores. The findings indicated that repeat test-taking was a successful strategy for improving scores, particularly in the reading and listening sections of the test.
