News 印刷、Stray Notes on Kioto, Second Edition, Revised （1878）（以下SN）から調査した。SN は、京都に限定した観光ガイドブックであり、Celebrated Places in Kiyoto and the Surrounding Places（1873）（以下覚馬名所案内）に次いで古い名所案内である。作者は現在のところ不明である。初版（1874、兵庫にて印刷）、第2 版（1876、横浜にて印刷）には、「川下り」の項目はないが、改訂第2 版に初めて、「1876 年に最初に急流を下った内の一人」である西洋人の手記を引用した。また、キーリング編纂によるTourists’ Guide（1880）（以下TG）の「川下り」は、SN の編集物であったことが明らかになった。その後の「川下り」の初期の発展について、アーネスト・サトウ、ホーズによるA Handbook for Travellers in Central and Northern Japan（1881）（以下HT）と第2 版（1884）、チェンバレンとメイソンらの第3 版（1891）、第9
