Ohio（1919）には作者Sherwood Anderson の言うグロテスクな人々が多く登場する。彼らの大半は家族が揃っておらず、孫と祖母だったり、息子と父親、あるいは独り身だったりする。そのような中、Winesburg の“Godliness”に登場するLouise Bentley は他のグロテスクな人々とは異なり、銀行家の夫John Hardy と息子David という家族、そしてお金に苦労しない生活を手にしている。だが、それでも彼女は孤独から脱することはできない。Louise はなぜこういった生活をしながらも孤独なままのなのだろうか。Louise は息子David を祖父に預けて手放してしまうのだが、Winesburg でこういったことをする登場人物は他にはいない。一方、Anderson の最初に出版されたWindy McPherson’s Son（1916, 1922）では、2 章を使って主人公Sam McPherson の妻Sue が3 度妊娠しながら出産に至らず苦しみ、最終的に夫の連れ帰った養子を受け入れる姿が描かれている。これらのことから、Anderson の描く女性には子供の存在が大きな影響を与ええているのではないかと考えた。そこで本小\n論では、まずAnderson が女性や子供をどのように考えているのかを再考し、次にWindy McPherson’s Son のSue McPherson にとって子供はどういう意味を持つのかを考察する。さらにこれらを踏まえて、Winesburg のLouise Bentley にとっての子供と\nは何か、また彼女がなぜ孤独に陥ったのかを検証する。そうすることで、子供の存在を含めたSherwood Anderson の考えがLouise Bentley
