| 内容記述 | This study examines the special usage of the pronoun it in interview discourse by the three most recent U.S. presidents: Obama, Trump, and Biden, focusing on frequently co-occurring verbs and constructions, particularly the phrase “when it [comes] to X１.” In Japanese English grammar, this is classified as special usage when it appears in expressions involving time, weather, distance, or vague situations. Such usage is often assumed to lack a specific referent and instead function as a syntactic placeholder. However, as Egawa (1991) notes, the distinction between general and special uses remains ambiguous. Bolinger (1977) and Langacker (2009) argue that even in so-called special usage, it underlies a referent. Most previous research has focused on sentence-level qualitative analyses. This study, however, applies both quantitative and qualitative methods to examine the referentiality and discourse functions of it in relation to contextual conditions, such as discourse attributes and structure. It draws on the concept of “register” proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1989). Here, the special usage of it is assumed to contribute to structuring discourse and foregrounding political claims using its referential function. This approach offers a revised perspective on the discourse role of the special usage of it. | |||||
