| 内容記述 | Anna Y. Davis (1851-1944 hereafter AYD), whose correspondence with the American Board is discussed in this issue, was the first female missionary to Doshisha from Mount Holyoke Seminary (MHS). MHS, founded by Mary Lyon in 1837, encouraged students to become missionaries and sent the large number of female missionaries abroad in 19th-century America. AYD became the second headmaster of the Doshisha Girls’ School after Alice J. Starkweather (1849-1921). AYD came to Japan in 1879. She studied Japanese in Kobe and waited three years to be sent to a station before being selected for the Kyoto station. Unfortunately, during her less than three years in Kyoto, she experienced the “Doshisha Girls’ School Meiji 18 (1885) Incident”. AYD is the third missionary whose handwritten missionary documents we have typeset and translated. This time we paid special attention to her educational background and personality. The translation work reminded us again how important communicationp between people is for missionary work. |
