| 内容記述 | The population of Japan, which has one of the world’s highest life expectancies, has declined over the past 20 years. According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, if the current trend continues, the total population of Japan will be halved to less than 50 million by approximately 2100, when the children born this year will be in the later stages of seniority. The report estimated that 40% of the population would be older than 65 years by that time. In response to this national crisis, the government is attempting to provide support to families with children. However, it is also necessary to consider the views of young people (particularly young women) who may marry and have children in the near future and to reflect their views on policies. The answers to the related questions of 95 first-year students in the Department of Nursing at Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts were analyzed and discussed by four graduate students in the doctral program of the Faculty of Nursing. Unexpectedly, most students had a positive perception of marriage and starting a family. However, more than half of them imagined that getting married would limit what they wanted to do. More than 50% of the students insisted that the number of young people who believe that they do not necessarily need to get married and that they cannot afford to have children has increased amid the diversification of values in Japan when their lives are socially and economically difficult. Graduate students who analyzed the above results attributed the decline in the number of mothers and children in Japan to the systems and attitudes of the Japanese society, which have not kept up with the fact that women’s life options are increasing. As a countermeasure, they insisted that women should be provided with more equitable opportunities to receive education, to obtain jobs, and to be economically comfortable in Japan. They concluded that the long-term and fundamental solution to the declining birthrate is not to impose childcare solely on their family, but to form a community where everyone around children takes care of the children, who are conceptualized as “social treasures.” |
