| 内容記述 | This study clarifies the variations in Western floral patterns in kimonos and kimono fabrics from the Taisho and early Showa periods. The materials were selected based on photographs of kimonos with titles or descriptions meaning “western-style flower” published in the PR magazine, “Mitsukoshi”. This magazine was published by Mitsukoshi, a kimono and department store, between 1911 and 1933. As a result, 111 Western-style flower patterns were obtained as materials. The flower motifs included roses, tulips, dahlias, orchids, cosmos, poppies, and amaryllis, among others. The most common patterns were introduced collectively as “Western flowers and grasses” without specifying the flower’s variety. Some showed the characteristics of the aforementioned Western flowers, while others were of unknown varieties. However, they all gave the impression of differing from traditional Japanese patterns. Western floral patterns were used in several clothing, such as haneri, obi, yukata, and houmongi. In addition to introducing kimonos for sale, “Mitsukoshi” also published information on Western flower-patterned kimono contests, flower exhibitions, and horticulture. This shows how Mitsukoshi was actively disseminating information on new cultural and driving trends. The appearance of Western floral patterns had three peaks and was linked to social trends. | |||||
