In his early works, including “Briticism and Americanism,” his principal concern seems to have been in relativizing the values of various English used on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. As American national power grew, his creed of Americanism (American nationalism) came to be more explicitly reflected in his works. Matthews was committed to spelling reform, which was supported by Theodore Roosevelt, his long-time friend and ally in the literary world.
