| 内容記述 | During the Pacific War, thought control was imposed by the Japanese government. This paper focuses on Junichiro Tanizaki’s translation of “The Tale of Genji.” The state considered this classic piece of literature, which was also famous internationally, to be problematic, and there were fears that its publication would be banned. The reason for the ban was conventionally understood to be the work’s potentially impious descriptions of the emperor. However, an investigation of related materials, letters, and testimonies from those involved at the time reveals a different reality. This paper clarifies that the state’s true issue with the tale was its problematic plot that disturbed the ethics of the family community. | |||||
