内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 American Pastoral, the first novel of what loosely forms Philip Roth's "American Trilogy" differs from the other two novels in its presentation of the protagonist's life. The narrator Nathan Zuckerman disappears in the first fifth of the book, and the life oi Seymour "Swede" Levov is narrated as "biographical fact." The truth is, however, that the second half of the Swede's life story is mostly created or invented by Zuckerman. Furthermore, the Swede himself is described as an imaginative person.
Blindness and invisibility -the Swede's inability to fully understand his wife, daughter, and himself, and the invisibility of history- are two metaphors that occur throughout the book. Therefore, the protagonist's story is to he examined from both an individual's and historical perspective.
Using Leslie Fiedler's notion of the link between imagination in Jewish American literature and the Jewish American dream of assimilation in the post-World War II decade, this essay first attempts to explore the significance of protagonist's ancl narrator's imaginative/creative power. The essay then turns to an examination of historical aspects by focusing on the two wars -World War II and the Vietnam War- that had respectively a great impact on the Levov family in the opposite direction. Lastly, the imaginative strategy adopted by Roth in American Pastoral is placed within the context of Jewish American literature in the 1990s.
