内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The purpose of this paper is to examine the possibility that The Chimes (1844) assumed the aspect of an educational book to enlighten the poor and lead them to reclaim their lives. In The Chimes, the visions that Toby, the main character, sees on New Year's Eve exemplify the cruel in security that forces the poor to suicide. The horrible spectacles appeal to the readers' sympathy and urge improvement in the social condition of the disadvantaged. However, the work can be viewed, in the light of Dickens strong beliefs in lifting up the poor through education, as a direct appeal to the lower classes to improve their own lot.
The Chimes exposes two kinds of ""ignorance"". Toby becomes possessed with the idea that the poor are naturally bad and have no business on earth, overlooking the irrationality of the higher-classes because of his ""ignorance"". Other people may have become depraved from their ignorance of Biblical precepts, though their depravity is more a result of society's neglect.
I conclude that The Chimes was meant to enlighten the working class people themselves through a satire on hypocrisy and prejudice of the higher classes. And that Dickens intended for the poor to perceive the importance of education based on the Bible in order to save themselves from depravity and death in vindication of the despair that had driven so many to suicide.
