Relationship Between General English Language Proficiency And Specialized Professional English Acquisition Ability: Investigating students at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, DWCLA
We investigated the relationship between general English proficiency and the degree of acquisition of specialized English by students who took Pharmacy English A at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of our university.
The English placement test, the vocabulary quiz score in Pharmacy English A, and the final exam score were used as indicators to measure general English proficiency and the degree of acquisition of specialized English. Regarding the relationship between general English proficiency and the degree of acquisition of specialized English, the range of vocabulary quiz scores was wide, regardless of whether the score of the English placement test was high or low. When the English placement test score was high, the final exam score rate was not as wide as that when the score was lower. However, when the English placement test score was low, the final exam score expanded to a higher score.
The correlation coefficient between the score of the vocabulary quiz and the score rate of the final exam, which are both indexes of the degree of acquisition of specialized English, was relatively high at R2 =0.426. In contrast, the correlation between the score of the English placement test, which is the index of the general English proficiency, and the score of the vocabulary quiz or the score rate of the final exam was relatively low.
